Biography: Early Life and Family

Hunter Biden’s early life is marked by tragedy. Hunter, as well as his brother Beau and his sister Naomi, were all involved in a deadly traffic accident when Hunter was just a few years old. His mother and sister were killed in the accident. His father, President Joe Biden, had just been elected to office as a senator at the time, and Joe took his oath for the Senate office at the hospital bed of Beau. President Biden would earn his nickname “Amtrak Joe” due to the fact that he often traveled via train back and forth to Washington, D.C. from Delaware, where he raised his two boys as a single dad until he married current wife Dr. Jill Jacobs Biden. Hunter is said to have experienced head trauma as a result of the accident.

When the accident took place, Hunter was only three years old.

Joe Biden managed to keep his boys in Wilmington while he worked as a United States Senator. Hunter would attend and graduate from Archmere Academy. He then enrolled at Georgetown University, where he earned an undergraduate degree in History. Later, Hunter would enroll at the law school of Georgetown, but he eventually moved his educational endeavors to Yale University. He earned his qualifications to become an attorney at Yale.

Much of this portion of Hunter’s life is public due to his father’s position in the Senate. It is said that both Hunter and Beau encouraged their father to marry again, but, Hunter was a mere seven years old when his father married Jill Jacobs. Hunter has one half-sister from his father’s second marriage, Ashley.

Personal Life

Again, because of his father’s position, the American public is highly aware of Hunter’s personal life. Hunter married Kathleen Buhle soon after graduating from Georgetown. Together, Hunter and Kathleen had three children. Naomi, Hunter’s eldest child, was named after Hunter’s sister who perished in the car accident when Hunter was small. Naomi is in her twenties, but the public spotlight does not follow her in the way it follows her father. Hunter and Kathleen have two other daughters, Finnegan and Maisy.

Joe Biden came under fire for once referring to granddaughter Finnegan as “Hunter.” He then mistakenly called her “Natalie” – one of his other granddaughters. Other than this public faux pas, Finnegan Biden has a very low public profile.

Hunter and his wife Kathleen divorced in 2017; Hunter was said to have begun dating his former sister-in-law, Hallie Biden, after his brother’s death. That relationship is said to have ended in 2019.

Hunter married again in 2019, to Melissa Cohen. It is said that the pair married only six days after they met. The couple has a son, Beau, born in 2020.

Hunter allegedly has a child with a former dancer, Lunden Roberts. Roberts took Hunter to court regarding the paternity of the child, and the suit was settled in March 2020.

Hunter admits that he has struggled much of his life with addictions to both alcohol and drugs, something that was highly publicized due to controversy surrounding a laptop which belonged to Hunter. However, Hunter acknowledged his addiction battles in a memoir. Biden admits to multiple visits to rehab facilities, often after some negative life event (including the death of his brother to brain cancer).

Hunter cites a 2019 family intervention as the catalyst for his getting sober once more. Hunter says that his step-mother, Jill Biden, as well as his daughters planned the event, and, even though at the time Hunter refused help, he eventually saw that his family pointed out. He entered rehab again at the behest of his family, even though it would be in the midst of his father’s presidential campaign.

Age, Height, and Weight

Hunter Biden is 51 years of age. He is approximately 5′ 8″ in height, and he weighs approximately 139 lbs.

Net Worth

Information on Hunter Biden’s wealth varies. Some sources have his net worth at approximately $1 million, while others peg his worth at nearly $4 million.

Hunter has involved himself in many business ventures throughout his career. He has worked as a lobbyist as well as in investments. However, Hunter has begun pursuing painting and selling his works as of late. It is unknown what his salary is as an artist.

Career Outside of Politics

Hunter began his professional career by working at the now-defunct MBNA financial institution (MBNA was eventually bought out by Bank of America). Critics have pointed out that MBNA was one of Joe Biden’s chief campaign contributors at the time. Hunter worked as one of the board of directors for Amtrak as well.

Hunter Biden applied to become a part of the U.S. Naval Reserve in 2013. However, Hunter tested positive for cocaine a month after he had been sworn into service. He was discharged from the Naval Reserve shortly after.

Hunter has also had a long career as a “capital investments professional.” Hunter and his uncle purchased Paradigm Global Advisors, which was an international hedge fund. Hunter created his own consulting company called Seneca Global Advisors. Later, along with Devon Archer and Christopher Heinz, Hunter would help to establish the Rosemont Seneca Partners. Later he helped to establish Eudora Capital.

Hunter worked as an attorney at the firm of Boies, Schiller, Flexner LLP.

One of the positions that Hunter held prior to his father’s becoming president – and one for which Hunter has been painted as possibly in cahoots with Chinese business interests – is his time as a member of the board of a private equity fund BHR Partners, based out of China. Hunter admits that he was able to get a ten percent piece of equity in the company “at a discount.” The company is tied to Hunter’s Rosemont Seneca company as well as the Bank of China.

Hunter’s involvement in this company is one reason why former President Donald Trump called for an investigation into possible bribery and other illegal activities when Joe Biden was Vice President.

Another company with which Hunter Biden is associated is also controversial – Burisma Holdings. This company was owned by a Ukranian official, but Hunter claims he was hired to “help Burisma with corporate governance best practices.” Hunter served on the board of directors of Burisma until 2019. Again, allegations of impropriety came from the fact that Vice President Biden was instrumental in Ukraine – U.S. policy. Burisma was a natural gas company, and Hunter’s position with the company allowed him to be on the board of the company.

Much of the controversy surrounding Burisma has to do with a Ukrainian official who was tasked with investigating corruption. This official was eventually fired, and critics have said that Joe Biden made sure the official was relieved of his duties so that corruption on the part of Hunter Biden and Burisma would not be revealed.

Again, no Ukranian officials have ever found evidence of wrongdoing on the part of Hunter or Joe Biden.

Although there was much discussion as to whether Joe Biden and Hunter Biden had anything to do with Ukrainian corruption, bribery, or other unethical behaviors, there has been no evidence that either Joe Biden or Hunter had anything to do with illegal or unethical activities in the European nation. Ukrainian officials have said multiple times that there is no evidence of corruption or impropriety on the part of Hunter Biden.

Career in Politics

Hunter worked for the United States Department of Commerce during the Bill Clinton administration. However, once the Clinton presidency was over in 2000, Hunter formed a lobbying firm. Ironically, his partner in this lobbying venture was a friend of Joe Biden. President George W. Bush appointed Hunter as a member of the Amtrak Board of Directors in 2006. However, Hunter would leave this position once his father became the Vice President in 2008.

Since his father’s inauguration into the presidency, Hunter has backed off of any lobbyist activity.
